The Inproves project aims to develop prototypes of high performance brushless electric motors with permanent magnets that don't yet exist on the market and archetypes of a new generation of such components. The market is interested in motors for electric braking systems (power up to 2kW) and for traction-regeneration (power over 50 kW). An entirely original facet of the project is the integration of the two following aspects:
- The product concept.
- The implementation of a flexible manufacturing line designed according to the guidelines of Industry 4.0 (brushless motor and flexible line).
Exploiting the potential of the complete digitisation of the production process, it will be possible to monitor both the production process and the product using real or virtual sensors.
Having flexible and efficient production lines for the development of prototypes or small pilot batches is a critical factor for obtaining orders for subsequent mass production. The conception of such production lines carried out simultaneously with the product, as proposed by Inproves, thus enables considerable savings.
Inproves will promote the specific innovation objectives set by regional clusters on the subjects of Intelligent Manufacturing, the sector of Sustainable Mobility and Automotive in particular. The Lombard automotive cluster, consisting in more than 1,000 companies, is currently the fifth European pole and the second in Italy.
The Inproves model of collaboration between Large Enterprises and SMEs is the innovation model advocated by the Lombard Clusters. Inproves aims to create a best practice: the project will form a virtuous paradigm of collaboration between large enterprises and small and medium enterprises that will create an initial district in Lombardy that can be communicated to other companies in the region through the Lombard Cluster of Mobility.
In addition, the production and introduction of electric motors for electric cars has a potential for significant impact on environmental sustainability by reducing fossil fuel consumption. The challenge is to produce components with superior performance efficiently and at a low cost.
Sustainable mobility is one of the Lombardy Region's priorities. Inproves moves in this direction in the automotive sector by responding to the innovation objectives set out respectively in the Transport White Paper of the European Commission (2011), the Strategic Agenda of the National Cluster of Sustainable Mobility (2015), in the Work Programme (WP) of the strategy of intelligent specialisation of the Lombardy Region (2014).
The project also responds to the specific challenges of the manufacturing sector highlighted in the national strategy of Intelligent Manufacturing and that are applied within the Intelligent Manufacturing regional cluster.
