A Serbian start-up company is a next-generation data tracking, asset management and exploitation tool for smart electrical grids that provides a distributed ledger to manage unique identities and product passports of smart meters. The company is building software infrastructure on Blockchain to facilitate the encrypted, secure and transparent access to prosumer’s smart meters and metering records. It represents a form of KYC system but for smart meters, that would serve as enabler for more flexible reconciliation on physical or financial levels in electricity grids. Consequently, it would lead to much more efficient rebalancing process for electricity suppliers and traders, by supporting mobility of user accounts and quicker settlements. The company develops a standard mapping protocol for consumption data exchange between different Blockchain infrastructures, thus supporting data interoperability of distributed ledger technologies in terms of unique smart meters’ IDs, consumption records and energy behaviour, while maintaining prosumers’ privacy as a paramount. Utilizing Blockchain for smart meters’ identity management would increase security of the overall network, since every access to data would be traceable and approved by prosumers, making every possible unauthorized access highly visible and immediately sanctioned.
