• “Lombardia è Ricerca” Award, candidacies for the Sustainability issues are now open

The 1 million EUR grant assigned by the Regional authority to be put off: nomination up until 9/3/2021

Given the emergency caused by the Covid-19 pandemics, the 2020 edition of the “Lombardia è Ricerca” International Award is suspended.

The award shall be assigned in 2021, according to the guidelines issued by the Regional Council.

The “Lombardia è Ricerca” International Award, created by Regione Lombardia to promote and enhance local discoveries and scientific research having an impact on citizens, will be back in 2021.

The 2020 edition, this year focused on “Environmental sustainability and quality of life” - will be postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemics. Because of this, the terms to submit the candidacies are extended until 9 March 2021, in light of the months lost during the spring and in order to allow full participation, without any restrictions due to force majeure.

The focus on environmental sustainability will not change, as the reference topic for eligible research projects and results.

The 2020 award - opened by Regional Decree no. 2745 of 20.01.2020 - is therefore not cancelled. Instead, it will be assigned in 2021. Similarly, the 1 million EUR grand will be given during the Research Day instituted by the Region in November, on the anniversary of famous oncologist Umberto Veronesi’s death.

Target audience

Since 2017 the international award has been open for Top Italian Scientists (TIS). The Region asks them to report the discoveries they deem most significant in the realm of life sciences with a topic defined from time to time on the award rules.

In brief, this is an award by scientists for scientists: these Italian excellences - involved by the Region according to their H-index in the rank - are asked to propose the names of the potential winners, which are later submitted to a jury of prominent scholars and scientists, operating either in Italy or elsewhere.

More specifically, on 1 December 2020 the list of “Top Italian Scientists” eligible to submit their candidacy will be updated, in order to give an opportunity to other scientists becoming eligible to access the VIA-Academy official list and therefore take part in the nomination process.

The process will end on 21 March of next year.
