Join the event focused on the role of regions for the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability
In the context of the European Green Week 2021, on the 8th of June 2021, the European Chemical Regions Network (ECRN) organises the event “Circular Chemical Industries for Zero Pollution in EU Regions” from 10:00 to 12:00 am.
The scope of the event is to present the European Committee of the Regions (CoR)’s opinion on “Safe and sustainable chemicals for a toxic-free environment in Europe's cities and regions” and discuss its key recommendations with a special focus on the role of regions in implementing the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability to ensure zero pollution in chemicals production and consumption.
The EU Chemical Strategy is part of the EU's zero pollution ambition, a key commitment of the European Green Deal. It will help to create a toxic-free environment across the EU by better monitoring, reporting, and preventing and remedying pollution from the air, water, soil, and consumer products. It will also support the post-COVID 19 recovery by helping to rebuild a more sustainable EU economy, creating job opportunities, and reducing social inequalities.
As a Zero Pollution Action Plan will be launched during this year's EU Green Week, the conference aims to contribute to the ongoing discussion on how local and regional authorities can deliver a toxic-free environment in Europe's cities and regions. In particular, it will look at:
- the role of regional authorities in achieving zero pollution in chemical value chains;
- the need for multilevel governance to implement the EU Chemicals Strategy as part of the green recovery of the European economy;
- legal, financial, and technical barriers and opportunities faced by local and regional authorities in the handling of chemicals;
- interregional cooperation as a leverage to improve the safe production and sustainable use of chemicals in Europe.
