From the Lombardy Region, at the Villa Reale in Monza and via live streaming: R&I as levers of recovery
On 10 September 2021, the Lombardy Region's States General for Research and Innovation will be held at Villa Reale in Monza.
The works are inspired by a quote from Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Nobel Prize winner for Medicine in 1937: ‘Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought’.
Now more than ever, the States General are an opportunity to reflect on the new frontiers of innovation as a lever for recovery and development, in a context made more complex by the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.
As per tradition, the aim of the initiative is to encourage discussion with institutions, businesses, universities, technology clusters, research organisations and the general public on the development trajectories of the Lombardy region, in the light of the opportunities offered by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan and the 2021-2027 European Programme.
Registration is required to attend the event in person. Places are limited, but all proceedings can also be followed via live streaming on this Platform.

This will be followed by a discussion between Paolo Benanti, Extraordinary Professor at the Faculty of Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University and expert in the ethics of technology, and Gianni Bocchieri, General Director of Education, Universities, Research, Innovation and Simplification of the Lombardy Region, on the impact of innovation on individuals and societies, in search of a new humanism.
How can technological progress be translated into new existential coordinates? What is the role of institutions in a rapidly changing global context? These are some of the questions that this panel will explore.
The second round table, during which the Councillor for Education, Universities, Research, Innovation and Simplification will talk to three researchers who have won ERC (European Research Council) Grants at Lombardy's universities, is entirely devoted to the centrality of human capital and the role of scientific research in promoting intelligent, sustainable and inclusive growth in the regions: Valentina Bollati, Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical and Community Sciences, University of Milan; Giulia Fulvia Mancini, Associate Professor at the Department of Physics, University of Pavia; and Paola Saccomandi, Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Politecnico di Milano.
This meeting will provide an opportunity to discover some of the most promising research currently active in Lombardy, but also to reflect on how to increase the attractiveness of the Lombardy university system and to examine in depth the measures taken and the main investments planned by the Lombardy Region over the next seven years.

Planned interventions
